Quinta da Falorca stems from the union of the Silva Costa and Barros de Figueiredo families, merging their lands through marriage in the late 20th century, shaping a distinctive viticultural legacy spanning five generations. Initially, until 1963, wine production was bulk-sold without bottling. From 1964 to 1998, they collaborated with the Adega Cooperativa de Silgueiros, contributing to regional wine production. Since 1999, they've bottled and marketed their wines under various brands, including Quinta da Falorca, Palha Malhada, T-nac, and Noblesse Oblige, enhancing production value. This evolution solidified Quinta da Falorca's market position, offering high-quality products reflecting their rich viticultural heritage.
The Company
QVE — Sociedade Agrícola de Silgueiros emerged organically in response to economic needs. Creating added value became crucial for investing in vineyards and human resources, ensuring sustainable productivity both environmentally and financially. In 1999, a significant transition occurred as the agricultural legacy evolved into a company. A new winery, incorporating traditional granite lagares alongside an existing one, was built. This investment modernized production, maintaining quality and ensuring the long-term sustainability of viticultural activities.
The Location
Silgueiros, 12 km from Viseu, is ideal for Quinta da Falorca wines. Its granite soils, 500 meters above sea level, imbue wines with splendid aromas, minerality, and acidity. The microclimate, with cold winters and hot summers, suits viticulture, bolstered by the protection of Caramulo and Estrela mountains.
The Dão River flows through, enhancing grape maturation. Silgueiros, heart of the Dão Wine Region, has a rich heritage; its wines, enjoyed by Portuguese royalty like King Duarte, have historical significance.
Our vineyards sprawl across 13 hectares, with each hectare hosting 3,500 to 4,000 vines, culminating in an annual yield of approximately 70,000 to 80,000 bottles. We maintain an unwavering commitment to quality by exclusively utilizing grapes sourced from our own vineyards. Among red varieties, Touriga Nacional reigns supreme, constituting 60% of our vineyard, accompanied by Alfrocheiro, Jaen, Rufete, and Tinta Roriz. Our collection of Touriga Nacional features an impressive array of over 31 different clones, each contributing to the wine's unique complexity. Complementing our reds, Encruzado takes the lead among white grape varieties, with a subtle touch of Malvasia-Fina, ensuring that each bottle encapsulates the diverse terroir of Quinta da Falorca.
